Candidate Responsibilities

This unit focuses on expectations—what to expect of yourself, and of others in the co-teaching partnership. And then, what to expect of the student teaching year in general. We will begin by focusing on the “triad” of co-teaching: the candidate, the mentor teacher, and also the university supervisor—the third key person who plays an integral part in the success of the co-teaching approach.

Let’s explore the expectations and responsibilities of the credential candidate. First, the candidate needs to demonstrate a desire to learn with enthusiasm, show initiative as a student teacher, and have a spirit of inquiry on issues in education. It’s important that early in the placement, the candidate proactively seek out and meet school personnel, and learn school policies and procedures.

The candidate is also expected to be knowledgeable of the grade-level or course content they are teaching. They are expected to plan and teach engaging, standards-based lessons and reflect upon their practice. Also, the candidate should assist with classroom responsibilities such as record keeping, grading, and other tasks.

Finally, the candidate is expected to actively engage in co-teaching, listen to and apply feedback received from the mentor teacher and university supervisor, and effectively communicate with triad partners.
