Grade 1: The Sun, the Moon, and the Stars (1-ESS1-1, 1-ESS1-2)

Description

No matter where a student is located, the Earth revolves around the sun and the moon circles the Earth. All students have some sort of personal experience of the sun and moon, even if it is nothing more than viewing them during their day-to-day life. In this unit, students explore the relationships between the Earth, the sun, the moon, and the stars. They will do this with a variety of hands-on, differentiated activities designed to appeal to the broadest range of students. During this unit, students will make their own sundial and use its shadows to chart the sun’s path across the sky. With their bodies, students will model the movement of the moon and the Earth. They will create their own moon and sun information wheel that will help them track the moon phases.
