Co-Planning: The Big Picture

Co-planning involves analyzing student learning and developing instructional tasks to reach learning goals.

The co-teachers collaborate together to agree on the instructional goals for a lesson, the timeline for instruction, and the assessment plan they will use to ascertain student progress toward learning goals.

In addition, the co-teachers work together to select or create appropriate instructional tools and materials for the lesson.

Planning is part of the larger context of the teaching cycle, which includes four major stages: plan, implement, assess and reflect.

Plan includes all of the foundational elements that inform program design, such as the research base, mission, vision, standards and findings of previous assessment cycles.

Implement is the realization of these plans, including the delivery of research-based instruction, collaboration with colleagues and community, and engagement in professional development.

Assess represents the collection and analysis of data on applicant qualifications, candidate proficiencies, program effectiveness and unit operations.

Reflect focuses on data interpretation, sharing, gathering feedback, identifying future goals and actions and the celebration of success.

Each component represents the cyclical nature of the process.
