Other Considerations
Misunderstandings often occur when one person says something that is not received in the way it was intended. That’s why it’s imperative to effective communication that you get the other person’s perspective.
Acknowledge that you are hearing your partner. Even a simple nod is OK.
Whether you’re tossing or receiving the slippery egg, remember – it’s important to ask questions, whether for clarification or to gain the other’s perspective.
When you know you’re going to have a difficult conversation, remove as many distractions as possible. You might mute your phone or close the classroom door so that you are able to focus and listen carefully.
After your partner shares, repeat what you heard to make sure you understand his or her point.
After your conversation, reflect on how it went. Talk about how you might plan for future conversations.
