Mentor Responsibilities
Now let’s look at the responsibilities of the mentor teacher.
First, the mentor helps welcome the teacher candidate to the school and the classroom and reviews school policies and procedures as soon as possible. This includes emergency procedures. The mentor is expected to suggest to the candidate the many ways in which they can become involved in school activities, such as recess and bus duties.
The mentor also guides the implementation of the co-teaching strategies in the classroom. Throughout the semester, the mentor is expected to share materials and ideas, model effective teaching strategies and professional behavior, assist the candidate in planning standards-based lessons, and provide constructive feedback to the candidate.
Finally the mentor is expected to encourage innovation and allow the teacher candidate to try new ideas.
