Grade 2: Mitigating Erosion Through the Engineering Design Process (2-ESS1-1, 2-ESS2-1)

Description

This is a 5-day unit focused on the effects of water erosion land, and how engineers work to slow or prevent the effects of erosion. This unit is part of a larger Earth science unit; our Triad unit is designed around erosion and the engineering design process. We start our unit by looking at different types of erosion. Students will be able to define and describe the different types of erosion, and the effects it has on land. Next, we learn about the engineering design process. We taught students the steps engineers go through to solve a problem, and how they do it. We go deeper with these two phenomenon’s by studying how to mitigate erosion through the engineering design process. Students were able to work in groups and design a solution to slow or prevent the effects of water erosion on land. Students were able to work through their solutions, and redesign if necessary. This unit was designed to be very hands-on and inquiry based.
