Grade 7: Negotiating NGSS & Social Justice Education (MS-LS1-4, MS-LS1-5, MS-LS4-5)

Description

Genetically modified organisms (GMO’s) are plants, animals, bacteria, or viruses whose genetic information has been altered by scientists in a laboratory through the process of genetic engineering (University of Utah, 2016). GMOs are a very controversial topic in our society. It is important that all citizens are informed about GMOs in order to be involved in decision-making that routinely comes up regarding this topic of genetic modification.

Our seventh grade life science students engaged in a debate regarding GMOs. They were given many resources for researching both sides of the story in order to formulate their own opinions and answer the unit long research question: how can we, as environmental scientists, contribute to the GMO debate and provide different ideas that society may embrace?
