Grade 9-10: Evolution at the Population Level: Variation in Human Skin Color (HS-LS4-4)

Description

This unit uses the phenomenon of variation in human skin colors as an anchoring event for exploring the process of natural selection and how it leads to adaptation of populations.   Students are provided with information in the form of data and theory that they analyze for evidence to use in arguments supporting their claims regarding the phenomenon of adaptation. The unit format is based on the Generate an Argument Instructional Model (Sampson and Grooms, 2010) that provides the opportunity for students to engage in scientific argumentation.
